At Sow's Ear and Lost Acres, the focus is on temperament and working ability. There is no kennel...the terriers are all family members who live happily together 24 hours a day. It isn't at all unusual to have a litter of 3 week old puppies on the living room floor, playing with the entire pack of terriers, while their mom sits and watches contentedly. The adults know how to be gentle with tiny babies, and the pups grow up respecting their elders and knowing where their place is in the pack. Unorthodox, perhaps, and certainly not recommended for all JR's, the temperament has to be exceptional to be able to raise terriers this way. "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear..." This same temperament is exactly what makes Sow's Ear and Lost Acres terriers such fantastic workers in the field; they are focused, intelligent and sane. Puppies are accompanying the pack into the woods by the time they are 3 months old, learning how to use their noses and perfect their instinctive abilities. While their first "quarry" may be only a chipmunk, these early lessons are invaluable and play a major role in how well these dogs work as adults. Equally important are the lessons learned in respect, protocol and proper field manner; how to work side by side with other terriers and the lurcher. They simply get along with everyone. Consistent winners in the conformation ring, they excel in all sanctioned trial divisions...racing, G-T-G, agility, obedience. Contrary to what many believe, it is possible to breed a correct working terrier that can race. More than one Sow's Ear and Lost Acres terrier has pulled off the "hat trick", taking the Conformation, Racing and G-T-G Championships all in one day. Versatility is the key whether at a trial or in the huntfield or on the racetrack. But perhaps the most difficult goal to achieve when breeding Jack Russells is consistency. Because the Jack Russell is a "type" of terrier rather than a distinct breed, it is often very difficult to get them to breed true to type. Overall our terriers are very consistent in type, and it is flattering indeed when people cannot tell them apart....which is most of the time. Even I have found myself calling the wrong dog. Because of this care that is taken for planning each and every litter, we can confidently offer puppies that are guaranteed to be sound in mind and body. All puppies are vet checked, health guaranteed and BAER hearing tested. They are honestly evaluated, represented, and placed according to their abilities and potential.
